About McLean Borden Cottage

McLean Hospital, founded in 1811, is described by Harvard Medical School as "a world leader in the treatment and study of psychiatric illnesses" and "the nation’s oldest and foremost research program in a psychiatric hospital setting." This clinical expertise and evidence-based research extends to the entire continuum of care that McLean offers for addiction treatment, including the luxury treatment offered at McLean Borden Cottage.

The McLean Signature Recovery Programs—Borden Cottage and Fernside—are luxury programs specializing in treating men and women who have previously completed a treatment program but have relapsed or are at risk to relapse, who are ambivalent about making the changes needed to maintain sustained recovery, or who have tried other treatment programs but were not ready for and/or satisfied with the previous care.

Borden Cottage is located at one of Maine’s premier hilltop estates, a sixteen-thousand square-foot house with spectacular panoramic views overlooking island-studded Penobscot Bay. The “cottage” offers clients exceptional accommodations including beautiful private ocean view rooms with fully equipped ensuite bathrooms, world class amenities, and daily meals prepared by a classically trained master chef. This private compound features guest cottages, heated swimming pool, activities building (with bowling alley, billiards room, arcade and 50’s style diner), library, fitness and yoga studio, movie theater, and beauty salon. Patients also have access to local resources including skiing, swimming, and tennis.

Treatment Approach

McLean provides individualized care designed to address the mental, physical, and spiritual components of addictive disorders by integrating proven (empirically supported) treatment models. Treatment is provided under the supervision of Harvard Medical School-affiliated clinicians who are experts in substance use disorders and related psychiatric conditions. The programs combine intensive individual therapies, small group treatment, and extensive health education with a comprehensive mind and body recovery program that includes yoga, individualized fitness plans, nutrition education, smoking cessation, and expressive art and music therapies.

Evidence-based psychological treatments that may be used include: motivational enhancement therapy (MET), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Co-Occurring Disorders

By tailoring treatment plans to fit specific needs, McLean Borden Cottage is especially equipped to help individuals focus not just on their addiction, but on co-occurring psychiatric diagnoses as well. These diagnoses frequently include depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD.

Family Program

McLean Borden Cottage believes that family involvement is a key component for successful recovery and incorporates patient families into the program in a variety of ways, including family sessions, family education, and aftercare planning and support.

Harvard Medical School Affiliate

"McLean Hospital is an affiliate of Harvard Medical School . . . so we're fully a part of that system, which means that when we approach a problem like addiction or like depression, we're approaching it with that same high level of evidence-based proven methodology that you would expect if you went to get surgery or cardiology treatment at a major academic center." - Rocco A. Iannucci, MD
